Saturday Night Fever

We have apparently entered an era where immigrant-bashing is again in style. I'm on record here as saying, HEY- you want to come here and you want to work? Come on over! This country was built by hard-working immigrants, and it was always the last generation who wanted to pull up the plank to keep the next generation (which was from somewhere else) out.

I find it especially ironic that the current anti-immigrant hysteria is focused on "illegal" (i.e.- undocumented) immigrants from south of the border, since the 9-11 attacks came from perfectly legal visitors from north of the border.

On a seemingly unrelated note, I have always been annoyed that the Bruce Springsteen song "Blinded by the Light" is known to most people from Manfred Mann's distinctly inferior version. The song is from The Boss's "Greetings from Asbury Park" album, back when he was still toying with the idea of being the 1980s Bob Dylan, and I have always preferred the more raw Springsteen version.

Ok, so how to these two thoughts tie together? I bring you, Saturday Night FEVER-

Just had a discussion about this whole thing with my son last week. He was downloading the Manfred Mann version when I pointed out the error of his ways.

The Vacant Lot had a great comedy bit on the song Blinded By the Light, and what the actual lyrics were. I think it might be on Youtube.

Hey! I liked the Manfred Mann version of BBTL! Distinctly inferior indeed!

Didn't know it was a Springsteen song! Don't like it anyroad but his is a bit better than Manfreds.

Not sure why America is so paranoid about immigrants when it's such a huge place. Us Brits are 'cause it's a little Island and we've run out of room.

Making a special request to some of my blogger friends:

I am on a campaign to get Fox Sports to name their new mascot the Gopher Cam which is used at their NASCAR races. (I personally find the gopher annoying.) I would be so grateful if my friends would just take one moment to visit www.foxsports.com and go to vote for a name for the gopher cam and submit "Road Kill."

They already mentioned my name on the air earlier with the suggestion and NONE of the drivers are giving any good ideas with the exception of Casey Mears who later in the show suggested the same name. I hope he wins. PLEASE HELP!

Your help would be greatly appreciated and a cause close to my heart. Please pass this request along and I will report on the name game when they air it next week.

Power in numbers!

Thanks!

Yeah, we need to really think about the whole immigration thing. For example, we should immediately grant citizenship to every one of those beautiful, skinny, Russian girls who come over to work the Jersey Shore in the summertime.

dammit- sorry, sorry, sorry- on the road all day and not enuff time to reply. This is not anywhere near The Boss's original version of the song- I like the Manfred Mann version fine, but the Springsteen version on his album is MUCH better. Raw.

This version I found very funny because it is utterly different- a Mexican version, and a lot of fun.
