Monday Musings-

Amy and I were driving home last Monday afternoon when we passed a house with the remains of a weekend yard sale sitting there beside the road in several cardboard boxes with a big, nicely-lettered "FREE" sign in front of them. Amy got out and poked around but didn't see anything, but I knew what I wanted, so I took the sign. Hey, it said it was free.

-

Speaking of truth in advertising, driving to a bookfair Saturday morning we passed a store called "The Final Markdown" and they had big signs in their windows announcing their "Big Fall Sale".

Now how can a store called "The Final Markdown" then put stuff on sale?

-

The dj of the morning show on our local Country station has a daily quiz (yes, I listen to country music when the news on NPR gets too depressing). Last week he asked the following question, and I was surprised that it took 8 callers before he got a correct answer-

William's wife Wendy was washing woolens while weeding her wonderful wildflowers. How many "W"s are there in all?

Now, I assumed everyone had heard a variation of this riddle before, but if you haven't and are still puzzling, ask yourself what question is really being asked.

It's a rainy, gloomy Monday here in Western Massachusetts, but we're all happy because both the Sox and Pats won yesterday, and there's no snow in the forecast.

It feels like a Veronica Lake sort of day.

UPDATE:

A new commenter, Moooog35, appeared this morning in response to this post, so I mosey'd on over to take a look at his blog and read the funniest damn thing I've read in a long time. It's called "Raisins are People Too". I see a few of you have already found this, but anyone who has not yet seen it needs to go over, NOW.

Now, if you Yanks will only lay down and lose .. .

Forrest Proper said...

Malach- I'd like to see the Yanks drag their series out to 5, for two reasons- first, the Cleveland/NY games are pretty good, and second, I'd like to see both teams tire out their pitching staffs this week.

A Veronica Lake day is *always* a good day.

I was about to add a comment like, "how can you be happy when the Yankess won?", when I noticed everyone else's comments.

You have a good point. PLUS, wasn't it just beautiful that the Rocket could only go 3 innings? Makes the Yankees win almost seem okay, given the fact that Roger bit it.

..good times..good times.

NPR's music makes me want to kill myself. their content is usually good, but the music is atrocious.

also, the store named "the final markdown" having a sale, would be clever to call it "the final FINAL markdown" or the "last markdown".

and somewhat unrelated, i know wish i lived "back in the day" to do naughty things to veronica lake. thanks for posting a pic of her.

Hello? I'm still here!!!! The lone Yankees fan! Don't worry; if we make it past tonight's game, I'll be shocked. (Stoopid Roger Clemens.) Oh yeah...Veronica Lake? VavavaVOOOM!

To make matters worse, The Allmighty Yankees got beat by Cleveland. Hello? Cleveland?

NPR is the polar opposite of Fox News and I just can't take either one of them. Whatever happened to the good old days when news outlets just reported the news and left the "slant" out of it?

Forrest Proper said...

Phoebe- It's true.

Moooog- Thanks for coming by! I'd like to see 2 more games, each, oh, 12-14 innings, with final scores of about 17-16.

Joey- That says it all!

T-Bird- Our NPR station does it's own classical music between 9 am and 4 pm, and I usually switch over after an hour or two of that. I like classical too, but a month or so ago it must have been Mussorgksy's birthday or something, and various hosts managed to play different versions of "Night on Bald Mountain" 3 times between 9 and noon...

HTGT- I wonder if this will be Roger's final "final" year?

Mike- Does Margaret Whitton still own the Indians?

Col. thanks for the lead on Moooog's blog. Hysterical.

When I was a kid, we had a pool installed and there was this massive mound of dirt left out front. My mom put a sign in the pile that said, "Free Dirt, Can You Dig It?". The sign was stolen three times before the dirt got hauled away.

On my way to check out the raisins. Happy Monday, CC!

I would also lick Lake's carpet. I liked her because she was short too. Too bad her life ended in poverty.

Forrest Proper said...

Bruce- You're welcome, all his stuff seems quite funny.

Sara- Sounds like California?

C.Rag- Yes, her life did not have a happy ending. But, nothing to be done about it now...

W's? I'm gonna say zero. Just because I like to say zero.

Veronica Lake...yum. Yum.

Bookfairs, also a yum.

Veronica Lake makes rainy Monday's worth getting out of bed for.

I always wondered if anyone ever took the "free" signs...seems like an obvious choice to me, only I'm too lazy to pull over, unbuckle, get out, get the sign, heft it into the car, get back in myself, buckle up and go. Too damn much work involved.

Forrest Proper said...

Tom- Zero is correct, Sir! There are no zeros in "all".

Kerstin- In complete honesty, what actually might have happened is that I might have suggested to Amy that we take the sign because it was free, and then we laughed and drove away without it.

Or not. Whichever way y'all like the ending.

coincidentally i watched I Married a Witch today .....it was originally supposed to have Joel McRae who after working with Veronica Lake on Sullivan's Travels commented that 'life's too short to work with her again.'

If you were listening to the 'w' question on the radio, how can you be sure the quiz master wasn't asking: 'How many 'w's in awl?

Hmm?

Love the sense of humour. My wife would say that I would think of the same things. No harm in looking at things a little differently :-)

Hey Colonel - thanks for the Kudos. That's huge, and appreciated.

On a bonus note - Yankees are done (baseball for those out of the country or people who read Star Trek novels) - so it's gonna be a good Tuesday as well.

You need more musings about dogs.

That picture of Veronica Lake is so steamy my glasses have fogged up. She is sexy and class rolled up into one, a rare combination these days.

I have fee Jesus right here, come get some.

Forrest Proper said...

Gods- Now that you mention it, I think I've heard that quote before.

Reverend- Drat!! This just proves, take NOTHING for granted.

Sirdar- Yeah, it works as a grown-up. In school we got in trouble for it.

4-D- I was going to say the Pats are the local football team, but that would just confuse the matter further.

Moog- You're quite welcome, you write damn funny stuff.

Cash- I'll get the staff to work. ANYthing about dogs will do?

Beach Bum- You're forgetting BrIT'ney and Paris.

PrePonderings- That was a wonderful moment indeed.

Popey- Yeah, about those fees you're charging...
