I Can't Hear You...

Some of you may recall that a Monday or two ago I posted a 19th-century picture of a gentleman wearing what turned out to be a long-range listening device -my thanks to the Good Reverend for pointing out exactly what we were looking at.

Well, I've come across another example, of sorts, this time on the bookplate of book and type designer W.A. Dwiggins. This dates from the early 1930s-

Very stylish, I think.

What in the world was it that these people were so intent on listening to back then?

Well that'll teach me to keep watching the comments! Cool stuff from the Rev.

As for this, quite the fashion statement, yes. I mean, you know what they say about men with big ears...

Mike- same as now- a glimmer of truth.

We're still waiting.

Phoebe- you've been skipping the comments? I'd wondered why you'd missed last week's free hot tub/Porsche giveaway.

Do I dare mention the design bears an amazing resemblance to Mickey Mouse ears?

Not only has this guy got the hearing of a bat, he's got the appearance of one too...

Is there any evidence that his name might have been... Bruce Wayne...?

And dang it, I've searched through every comment from last week and I still can't find the Porsche/hot tub giveaway.

This isn't some Playstation giveaway kinda thing is it?

Lynn & Reverend- Mickey Mouse and Batman! Never thought of that. The guy has black bangs and has always reminded me of Mr. Spock.

oh, and Reverend- sorry, yes, we had to take that down. Slight mistake here at the home office and everyone won, so we had to substitute 3-year old Snickers bars for the Porsche and hot tub. But that's what those cool little asterisks are for, right?
