Oh. Well, That's innocent Enough.

Here's a rather frightening series of illustrations from a 19th century French inventor's magazine I just bought-

Now, I'm not sure what this looks like to you,
but I know what it looks like to me-

ok, yeah, this is what I thought the next step would be...

please please please please don't show what comes next.

oops. Oh.

It's just a roll of paper advertisements
to be read by passersby.

I'm not sure whether this makes me happy or sad...

BUT if you think about it, the inventor really did miss an opportunity there. After all, you have a captive audience in the um... facilities, where on the street it is more of just an option you may walk by.

I'm sure it's only a matter of time before somebody starts selling ad space on tp. I can't really imagine why they haven't already.

Yeah, and when the advertisers found that after a week the roll was still full, they went and got some poor wretch to go around and stuff the leaflets in letterboxes.

(The internet equivalent of this would be a site where you go and download some spam. Bwahahahahaha! Maybe your first impressions of what it was were the most accurate)

See, I thought it would be toilet paper.

Dear Colonel/Mr. Mad Bookseller... I have a question (its me NerdGirl with a new blog)... I am reading a book right now that has a reference in it that I cannot find the meaning too... I've googled, asked everyone I could think of and then I thought of you ... The Mad Bookseller!

Maybe you would have the answer?

I am reading The Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry. A psych hospital in Ireland is closing down in the late 40's ... a character in the book who has been there her whole life stumbled upon a ward in the hospital during a fire that held "One Time Women". Do you know what that means? I can guess, but I want to know for sure! Any idea??

The Secret Scripture is a wonderful book, I loved it.

One Time Women, to me, meant that they were at one time women, but are now so ancient, decrepid and useless, that they have moved beyond gender. It seemed to me to be a reflection of where our main character ends up, before regaining ... whoops, I just realised you wrote "am reading" so I will say no more.

ooh Cissy. That explanation for a 'One Time Woman' never occured to me! Thank you... looking forward to finishing the book!
